Without Camille Pissarro, the Impressionist movement would never have existed. He is rightly known as the father of Impressionism!

Pissarro took the bold step of corresponding with his family about his artistic philosophy and vision. These intimate letters, which shed light on numerous facts and connections, formed the foundation of the screenplay for our documentary, through which we seek to gain a deeper understanding of Pissarro’s life and artistic career.

Born in the Caribbean, Pissarro developed a passion for painting as a young man and travelled to Paris. By the age of 43, he had gathered around him a small community of dedicated artists.

Although their first exhibition was harshly ridiculed by contemporary critics, it was there that they acquired the distinctive name by which they would become known: the Impressionists. Over the following forty years, Pissarro became the driving force behind an artistic movement that has since grown into one of the world’s most beloved styles.

The Ashmolean Museum has long been synonymous with quality. As the United Kingdom’s first public museum, opening its doors in May 1683, it houses an extraordinarily rich collection, including an important Pissarro archive. Our documentary crew was granted exclusive access to this exceptionally rich archive devoted to Impressionist painters, as well as to an exhibition presenting the most significant Pissarro retrospective in forty years. We hope this privileged access will allow us to share fascinating and important biographical discoveries about this extraordinary artist.

This major exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is the most significant retrospective of Pissarro’s work in the past forty years. Cézanne famously referred to Pissarro as “the first Impressionist.” The Ashmolean holds a unique collection of Pissarro’s works, letters and other artefacts relating to his life and career.
