a a bostoni Szépművészeti Múzeummal együttműködve első alkalommal
Napjaink vil
ághírű festője azok közé a XX. századi művészek közé tartozott\
A kiállítás hét évtized műveit gyűjti egybe\, a legkorábbi kép 1
 939-ben\, a legutolsó pedig 64 évvel később készült. A válogatás l
Alkotói módszereit a vonala
k által dominált\, korai grafikus hatású munkáitól egészen a vastag
ecsetvonásokból épülő\, pasztózus festményekig követhetjük\, ame
lyekben megtalálta a maga stílusát. Lucian Freud számára a nézés\,
a megfigyelés aktusával a mindenséget fogja át a tekintet. A kiállít
ásról készült film egyedülálló lehetőség egy nagy kortárs mester
művészetének és gondolkodásának megismerésére. In collaboration w
ith the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston\, London’s Royal Academy of Arts b
rought together and exhibited Lucian Freud’s self-portraits for the firs
 t time\, from 27 October 2019 to 26 January 2020. The exhibition featured
more than 50 paintings\, prints and drawings by the master of contemporary
British art\, who died in 2011 and was the grandson of Sigmund Freud. One
of the world’s most celebrated painters\, Lucian Freud belonged to a gr
oup of 20th-century artists who consistently turned their attention toward
s themselves over several decades\, documenting the changing nature of the
ir self-image. When Lucian Freud was asked whether he made a good model fo
 r himself\, he replied: “No\, I don’t accept what I see when I look at
myself\; and that is where the problem begins.” It is precisely this
“problem” that makes Freud’s self-portraits so fascinating. With eve
ry painting\, he began the process of defining himself anew. The exhibitio
n brings together works spanning seven decades\, from his earliest portrai
t\, painted in 1939\, to his last\, created 64 years later. The selection
offers a remarkable insight into both the artist’s psyche and his artist
ic development. His paintings document not only the ageing process but als
o changing attitudes towards self-representation and self-esteem. In his y
outh\, the artist depicts himself as the Greek hero Actaeon\; in his later
years\, he appears as a frail\, ageing man standing naked before us in un
tied boots. The exhibition traces his artistic methods from his early work
s\, dominated by lines and characterised by a graphic quality\, to the hea
vily textured paintings built up with thick\, impasto brushstrokes\, throu
gh which he ultimately found his distinctive style. For Lucian Freud\, the
act of looking and observing was a way of encompassing the world through
the gaze. This exhibition film offers a unique opportunity to explore the
art and thinking of one of the great masters of contemporary art.
