𝘿𝙞𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥, 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚

They say that for 𝘿𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙙 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙤, a record’s fate didn’t depend on whether it was well-known or how many copies were sold. At 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙛𝙩 - which wasn’t actually a club, but rather an invitation-only house party he started in his own apartment in 1970 - entirely different rules applied. He didn’t really believe in the concept of a “hit”; he often played records that no one was looking for in record stores at the time. He played records from start to finish, without adjusting the volume or speed, and maintained that if a recording is good, it should be allowed to play through just as it was made.

Meanwhile, 𝙏𝙤𝙢 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙤𝙣 noticed something that DJs in clubs had already sensed: the three- or four-minute soul singles produced for radio were simply too short for the dance floor - they often ended just as the groove was really getting going. He began creating longer mixes, and then started taking the tracks apart and rebuilding them in the studio: with longer intros, instrumental sections, breaks, and a more repetitive structure. This gave rise to one of the key stylistic elements of the disco genre: the extended mix.

At 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚, 𝙇𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙇𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙣 was already speaking this new language: dubs, extended versions, B-sides - while the genre itself wasn’t confined to a single sound. Alongside the strings of Philly soul, the heavy basslines of funk, and the orchestral arrangements of Salsoul, synthesizers, drum machines, and electronic experimentation made their debut. In Italy, this gave rise to Italo disco, while elsewhere, boogie, hi-NRG, and electro pushed the genre’s boundaries even further.

Then, after a long hiatus, the late 2000s saw a major revival of disco music. Edits, re-edits, white labels, and hidden gems - all discovered and reimagined by legendary selectors like 𝘿𝙅 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙮, 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙤 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝, and even 𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙙 𝙏𝙚𝙧𝙟𝙚.

Today, we believe there’s a widespread misconception about disco music: many people equate this genre with overplayed hits that stay in a mix for barely a minute, just long enough to ride the wave of current internet trends. This is the exact opposite of what Mancuso set out to do in the 1970s when he conceived of disco.

We’d like to prove Mancuso right for one evening and lose ourselves in this world for a night - and a carefully curated selection will help us do just that:
