From Promising Practices to Structural Change: Roma Desegregation in Education and Housing in Hungary and Europe

26 October 2026

Central European University’s Romani Studies Program, Roma Civil Monitor and Democracy Institute invite you to a half-day hybrid workshop on the future of Roma equality policy in Hungary and in Europe, with a focus on desegregation in education and housing.

Venue: Central European University, Budapest Campus, Nádor utca 15, Room 103 (online participation available)

Language: The workshop will be held in English. To reach a wider Hungarian-speaking audience, a Hungarian-language summary report will be published shortly after the event.

Registration by 22 October 2026 at https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/UYJags6Ls3 (opens in a new tab)

About the workshop

As the new Hungarian government shapes its approach to Roma equality, this workshop asks what it will take to turn promising local initiatives into coherent, sustainable public policy. Policymakers, practitioners, researchers, civil society and Roma stakeholders, and European institutions will take stock of earlier Hungarian policies and compare them with European experience. The discussion covers the legal, institutional, financial and political conditions that effective desegregation requires.

Three panels cover EU frameworks and Hungarian policy, school desegregation, and housing desegregation. They will explore how EU, national and municipal instruments can support lasting change and where cooperation can go next.
