“Everything used to be better!” While that might not apply to absolutely everything, it certainly holds true for Budapest’s reggae-dancehall parties! A pivotal force behind the dancehall craze that swept through the early 2000s was undoubtedly the Irie Maffia Soundsystem; an entire generation grew up attending their parties, seeking out the freshest tracks alongside classic Jamaican tunes week after week. Their events hosted Hungarian Dancehall Queen competitions and welcomed numerous Jamaican stars—and on one occasion, even Diplo stopped by to play a set.
Years passed; Dermot and Jumo Daddy explored other musical styles, while MCs Kemon and Columbo focused primarily on the live band version of Irie Maffia. Now, the time has come for the legendary crew to reunite and make periodic appearances as part of *Budapest Tropical*, a new Thursday concert series at Instant-Fogas. What’s more, the October 29th event marks the 45th birthday of the sound system’s founder, Dr. Dermot (Márton Élő)—and there is no better way to celebrate than with a dancehall party.
