Fabrice Toussaint (Denis Podalydès) is a famous writer and philosopher. Although he leaves an MRI examination in Boston without being diagnosed with an illness, the local doctor, Dr. Ted Cagney (Jochen Hägele), only allows him to return home after recommending follow-up examinations every six months. Fabrice’s brother, Alex (Fabrice Scott), did not take the test results quite so seriously. However, once back home in Paris, the writer cannot stop worrying about his questionable medical findings. He meets Dr. Augustin Masset (Kad Merad), who immediately tells him that he admires his work and, because of his own profession, particularly appreciates one of his books. The two quickly hit it off. Augustin works with terminally ill patients and is happy to share his experiences. Fabrice’s naturally curious philosophical mind comes to the fore, and he begins accompanying Augustin on his visits to patients, where he asks them unconventional, thought-provoking questions. Florence (Marilyne Canto) notices that her husband is becoming increasingly anxious about the end of life and death. He struggles to accept the inevitability of death, so she suggests that he co-write a book on the subject with Augustin, combining the experiences of a practicing physician with the reflections of a philosopher. The idea appeals to them, and shortly before Fabrice’s repeat MRI examination, they set to work. The film also promises a veritable parade of stars in supporting roles, including Charlotte Rampling and Karin Viard (The Bélier Family).
